Your vacation is over... Now what?

You know that feeling. Taking some time off is perfect. But then, you need to come back. These ups and downs are challenging (mainly the downs). Here is how to overcome them.

Person A: "I'm bored. I want to come back to work."
Person B: "What are you talking about?"

You certainly know someone like Person A. But they have different issues.

Today, we will talk about the second one (here I am) and how to fight that depression when we face the end of the holidays and the beginning of a new working cycle.

Reaching home after a deserved relaxing period is excellent. We miss our stuff.
But the difficulty is entering our day-to-day Life again after some days off.
We were off everything (habits, work, diet, routine, etc.).

So, how do we overcome this?

  1. Avoid looking at it as a stage that is ending. Instead, understand it as a new promising cycle in which you will recover your healthy habits and the things you choose for your Life.
Because let's be honest, we can't live on Vacation. It would be insupportable for us and the people around us.
  2. Take advantage of the creativity and the time you had during the break.
Think about the things you will miss the more from your holidays. You can add some of them to your day-to-day Life.
If you enjoyed certain foods, places, or activities, include them in your routine.
For example, I tasted a steak tartare on my holidays. So, I repeated the experience a few times during the year and felt the memories returning. That's awesome.
  3. On the other hand, think of the things that are waiting for you.
What does turn you off? Activities or people at work, commutation, chores, places, etc.
You can either avoid them or do them more pleasantly. Don't settle.
You had time to look at them from a different perspective.
If you can't change them right away, design a plan to improve them in the future.
Use your recharged energy to build a better life, but save it from being drained again by the same issues as the previous cycle.
  4. If you feel like it, do a balance of your holidays while they are still fresh in your head.
    - What would you do again?
    - What would you do differently the next time?
    - How did you feel, and what difficulties you experienced?
Many people get more stressed when on Vacation than when working. If this happens to you, assess it. Are you spending your leisure time in the right way?
When we were younger, we used to take vacations in a group of 6 friends. And we decided that we didn't need to do everything together. We could choose different activities or places some days; the rest shouldn't get angry. That was extremely healthy.
  5. To return to your habits, go all-in for some of them (get up time, job, etc.), and step by step for others (e.g. diet, training, projects).
    But avoid overcompensation.
Ok, you gained a few pounds, so what? Don't freak out. Don't start a strict diet that will only stress and frustrate you.
If some work accumulated, don't work overtime to finish it.
Things will settle as soon as you come back to your routine.

Conclusion

Well, that's it. We had a great time on our Vacation, and we need to be thankful for it. The summary is:

  1. Nothing ended. New Beginning
  2. What did you like? Bring more of that to your Life
  3. What is scaring you in your return? Eliminate it, or change it.
  4. How were your vacations? Plan the next ones (at least a few constraints)
  5. Get on track, little by little.

I hope you enjoyed it. Have an excellent New Work Cycle!
